The late Charles Mkunga

This week the adult education sector in Malawi lost a great friend and advocate. Charles Mkunga was the Deputy Director of Community Development at the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, where he coordinated Malawian adult education through the National Centre for Literacy and Adult Education.

Charles guided Malawi to its first ever Policy for Adult Literacy and Education in 2020. This was a milestone for the country. For the first time, the sector had a guiding framework for the adult education sector. This was followed in 2022 by the National Strategy for Adult Literacy and Education, which will serve as a road map for adult in Education in Malawi for many years to come. Among many other contributions to adult education in Malawi, these two stand out as major achievements that will endure as part of Charles’ legacy.

Charles also worked tirelessly to build bridges for adult education. In recent years, he oversaw improved coordination and cooperation of the sector by reaching out to civil society stakeholders and others in order to strengthen adult education in the country. He led a process of innovation that has seen new approaches to adult education introduced that have the potential to reach more Malawians in need of education.

Charles was also a close friend and colleague of DVV International. Scarcely a week would go by when we weren’t in and out of each other’s offices organizing adult education activities together. He supported DVV and was always available whenever we needed his help with anything.

On behalf of DVV International, we offer our sincere condolences to his family and colleagues, and to the wider adult education family in Malawi that has lost a true friend. Charles, you will be missed.
